OBS Ethics Code
Congregation Ohev Beth Sholom Ethics Code
This Code of Ethics is based in Jewish values and is intended to guide behavior in our congregational community. It sets forth general guiding standards of conduct and expectations in interactions of our congregants with clergy, staff, guests, and other congregants while participating in Ohev Beth Sholom-related activities in the building, online, or offsite. It also applies to representatives of Ohev Beth Sholom while participating in community events or representing the organization.
Respect In Every Relationship
- Ohev Beth Sholom believes that everyone engaging in our sacred space has the right to be safe and respected.
- We welcome everyone without regard to religious background, age, race, color, ethnicity, nationality, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, or socioeconomic status.
- We treat everyone with respect, dignity, fairness, and compassion.
- We do not condone sexual harassment, including unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and any other verbal, physical, written, or visual conduct of a sexual nature.
- We do not condone intimidation, retaliation, offensive, abusive, or other inappropriate behavior, or the creation of a hostile environment or atmosphere.
- We do not condone any humiliating, oppressing, degrading, or bullying behavior, including verbal or physical abuse, or cyberbullying.
Integrity In Each Action
- Ohev Beth Sholom expects that all who engage in our community will conduct themselves with integrity and honesty.
- We act solely in the best interest of Ohev Beth Sholom when acting on its behalf.
- We refrain from using our position at Ohev Beth Sholom for personal advantage, gain, or benefit.
- We do not engage in favoritism or nepotism in any context at Ohev Beth Sholom
- We conduct financial matters related to Ohev Beth Sholom with complete honesty and transparency.
- We represent Ohev Beth Sholom as congregants and lay leaders in a moral and ethical manner.
- We protect confidential information, either about an individual or Ohev Beth Sholom.
This Code of Ethics is an evolving guide which cannot address every situation or contingency; a level of common sense and good judgment is expected from all. Congregants should assume that behaviors which are not specifically captured above, but which are consistent with the spirit of this Code of Ethics are likewise covered. This Code of Ethics is subject to revision and review at any time.
To report a violation of this Code of Ethics, please contact the Executive Director, the Rabbi, or the President(s) of Ohev Beth Sholom.
